How long is a typical session?

The length of a session is determined by a number of factors. For starters, this is based on the need(s) of the client as determined by parent input, observation and evaluation results. In addition, insurance companies often have their own requirements as to what you are allowed to bill for so this must be taken into consideration. Another factor to consider is the length of time that a client can tolerate. For example, younger children or those with severe limitations may have a more difficult time tolerating lengthier sessions. Typically your session will be 30/45/60 minutes depending upon the stated factors.

How long will my child need to be in therapy?

This truly varies case by case. There are some children who begin therapy early and are able to close the gap within a year or two while others may need to remain in therapy for a longer period of time. There are many factors that have to be considered when answering this question. The most important is what is causing the need for therapy. If the speech/language need is secondary to another disability (i.e. - TBI, Autism, etc.), it is highly likely that therapy will occur for a much longer period of time.

How can I pay for speech/therapy services?

Do I need a script?

The most common ways that therapy services are paid for are either private pay (out of your pocket) or via insurance. You will need to contact your insurance company, and we will as well, to ask specifically if speech therapy is covered as well as if there are any exclusions or specific criteria that must apply for services to be covered (i.e. - diagnosis of Traumatic Brain Injury for ex). There may also be grants/scholarships available to families for therapy services, though I am unsure of the exact options and how to obtain them.

Yes, I will be asking you to get a script from your doctor regardless of private pay or insurance reimbursed services. It is helpful to have this information on file and in most cases necessary.
